Lidl is opening a new supermarket in Birstall, West Yorkshire, on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

Lidl is opening a new supermarket in Birstall on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 8:00am. The store is located on Bankwood Way and marks Lidl's first store in Birstall. The Huddersfield Examiner reports that Lidl is also opening a store in York on the same date at Clifton Moor.

Liam Schofield, Regional Head of Property for Lidl GB, said: 'We are incredibly excited to join the local community and businesses in Birstall. This fantastic new store is a direct response to the local demand for high-quality, affordable groceries, and we couldn't be prouder to welcome the community inside.'

Both stores have created up to 40 new jobs, with recruitment focusing on hiring people from the local area. The Birstall store will feature rooftop solar panels that will generate up to 25 per cent of its electricity needs, supporting Lidl's sustainability goals. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on the morning of the opening, with the Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Karen Allison, officially welcoming Lidl to the area.

The new Birstall shop will be one of the first to be served by Lidl's £150 million warehouse in Gildersome, due to open early next year and located just over a mile and a half away. Lidl said the warehouse and store reflect its ongoing investment in Leeds and the wider region.

Drivers will benefit from a new 12-bay ultra-rapid charging hub for electric vehicles, operated by Source, a joint venture between SSE and TotalEnergies. The chargers offer speeds of up to 320kW, with ten bays designed for vans and light goods vehicles.
