Lincolnshire Exhibition accused of political bias over speaker line-up

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 19 Oct, 13:02 · Archive

Unions have accused the Lincolnshire Exhibition of political imbalance after Liz Truss and Reform figures were announced as speakers.

The Lincolnshire Exhibition, modelled on the Victorian Great Exhibition, will take place at the Lincolnshire Showground on 21 October. The event was created by Reform Mayor Andrea Jenkyns to showcase Lincolnshire's food, defence and energy sectors and attract investment to the county.

Former Prime Minister Liz Truss, who served for 49 days, will speak alongside Reform figures Zia Yusuf and Newark MP Robert Jenrick. The line-up also includes Republican state representatives from Texas, Carrie Isaac and Jason Isaac, and Deputy Director No 10 North Duncan Parish.

Unions have accused the event of political imbalance. Bradley Wall, chairman of Lincoln and District Trades Council, said: 'Nobody objects to Greater Lincolnshire showcasing its businesses, entrepreneurs, engineers, farmers, scientists and innovators.' He added that the political speakers' selection criteria should be explained to demonstrate 'this isn't simply providing a publicly funded platform for a particular political outlook'. The Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority declined to comment. Last year, Andy Burnham, then Mayor of Greater Manchester, addressed the event, but no major Labour or centre-left figures are scheduled this year.
