Two vehicles crashed on the A64 near Rillington in North Yorkshire on Friday, closing the road both ways and causing severe delays.

Two vehicles crashed on the A64 near Rillington in North Yorkshire on Friday afternoon, blocking the road both ways and causing severe delays for motorists.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene at 3.30pm. One person was helped out of a vehicle by paramedics, while two other people were already outside the vehicles when crews arrived. Fire crews made the vehicles safe using small tools and then left the incident with police on scene.

North Yorkshire Police urged drivers to avoid the area. A force spokesperson said at 4.30pm: "Thank you for your patience, we hope to have the road clear in the next hour subject to vehicle recovery."

Traffic was moving "very slowly" along the route, according to the AA. An eye-witness reported being diverted from the A64 to the A169 and stuck in queuing traffic. "I can see a number of blue lights in the distance and the traffic is chaotic," he said. "It must be a bad crash as everyone is being turned round now and diverted via Kirkby Misperton."

Separately, foggy conditions led to motorists driving through road closure signs on the A169 near Low Marishes between Pickering and Malton, which had also been closed following a serious collision. Police asked motorists to find alternative routes while emergency services worked at that scene.
