Summarised from 3 outlets · 5 reports · Updated 7 Nov, 14:02 · Archive

A fire at a commercial garage in Ipswich involving multiple vehicles sent thick black smoke across the town centre.

A fire broke out at a commercial garage unit on Portman's Walk in Ipswich shortly before 11:30 GMT, involving multiple vehicles. The unit measured 20 metres by 5 metres.

Seven fire crews from Ipswich East, Holbrook, Saxmundham, Debenham, Needham Market, Stowmarket and Nayland were sent to the scene. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one hose reel jet and two main jets to tackle the blaze. They also managed hazards associated with smoke and fuel.

BBC Suffolk reports that callers heard an explosion and saw thick black smoke before firefighters arrived. The fire service said: 'Initial reports indicated a significant plume of thick black smoke visible from across the town, with callers reporting an explosion had been heard.' The large plume of black smoke could be seen rising from across Ipswich.

The garage unit is located near Ipswich Town Football Club's stadium, just beyond the Dunwell Motor Group plot and on the other side of the road from the household waste recycling centre. Police cordoned off Sir Alf Ramsey Way between West End Road and Constantine Road.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service advised people in the surrounding area to keep doors and windows closed and to avoid the area where possible to allow emergency services to work safely. Police and fire investigations officers attended the scene.
