Artist Jade Melany is showcasing oil paintings at the Whitehaven Town Council Gallery on Queen Street, opening Monday, October 19. Ms Melany is Glasgow-born but Cumbrian-raised. She is known for her magical ceramics, copper jewellery, and two globally distributed tarot decks: The Soulscapes Tarot and the Initiates Way Tarot. She also published The Initiates Way, a book exploring themes of spiritual alchemy, in 2020.

During the pandemic, Ms Melany used the book's visualisations to lead online group sessions. She said: 'I spend a lot of time in nature, connecting with the ancestors, land guardians at local sacred sites, rivers and all along the Cumbrian coast.' In summer 2020 she visited Carnac in Brittany, which she described as initiating 'a profoundly deep connection to the Otherworld.'

In early 2021, Ms Melany began creating clay sculptures using river water from nearby sources, producing clay lamps and magical creatures. She describes this work as a 'new journey' that began after a mysterious illness, which she said gave her 'a whole new outlook on life.' Some of these pieces are for sale at Gallery 9 on King Street, Whitehaven.

Visitors can meet the artist at the Queen Street gallery on Thursday, October 22, between 2pm and 4pm to discuss her creative process. An after-party talk with free drinks will follow at Gallery 9 from 4pm.
