Aphrodites Hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere has resubmitted plans to keep two shipping containers after its first application was refused.

W.A Howarth (Aphrodites Lodge) Ltd has lodged a retrospective planning application with the Lake District National Park Authority for two storage containers at Aphrodites Hotel on Longtail Hill, Bowness-on-Windermere. The application was registered on October 7 and is a resubmission of a proposal refused in March 2026.

The authority turned down the earlier application over concerns about the impact on neighbouring properties, citing visual and noise effects and a lack of evidence that nearby trees and hedges would not be harmed. The applicant says the revised scheme has been designed to address these concerns through repositioning and additional screening.

According to the submitted plans, the containers have been on the hotel site since November 2024 and provide storage space while the business undergoes internal refurbishment and considers future development options. The revised proposal would rotate the containers by 90 degrees and move them further into the hotel grounds, creating a minimum three-metre setback from the northern boundary with neighbouring properties.

The repositioning would place the container doors on the southern side, reducing potential noise disturbance from opening and closing them. Additional laurel planting is proposed along the northern boundary to improve screening and visual impact.

The Lake District National Park Authority will now assess the revised application against planning regulations and its impact on the designated landscape and neighbouring residents.
