Republican Senator Susan Collins is campaigning with former Democratic Senator Joe Manchin to highlight her independent record ahead of her tight Maine reelection race.
Republican Senator Susan Collins is campaigning with former West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, a former Democrat who later became an independent before retiring, to highlight her independent record as she faces a tight reelection challenge from Democrat Troy Jackson, a former state Senate president.
Collins, 73, is seeking her sixth term in what she faces as her toughest reelection fight. On Wednesday, the two made campaign stops together in Lewiston, Maine, including at Simones' Hot Dog Stand and a New Balance shoe facility in Norway. Collins said she and Manchin were 'part of every piece of bipartisan legislation that passed and became law' during their time in office.
Manchin endorsed Collins and praised her independent streak and her willingness to oppose Republican President Donald Trump, saying that to lose her would be 'to lose the soul of the Senate'. He described her as 'a true blue-blooded Maine person who knows exactly where she came from'. Jackson is scheduled to campaign in Portland on Thursday with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive congresswoman from New York.
