Hedingham Castle transforms into festive light trail this December

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 28 Oct, 16:09 · Archive

Hedingham Castle in Essex will host The Knight Before Christmas, a festive event with theatre, lights and soundscapes from December 6 to 20.

Hedingham Castle, one of England's best-preserved examples of Norman architecture, is to be transformed into a festive experience this December. The Knight Before Christmas will run from December 6 to December 20, featuring a collaboration between the castle and independent artists.

The event blends theatrical performances, festive illuminations and soundscapes woven throughout the castle grounds. Visitors will wander beneath illuminated trees, view reflections across the lake and explore the castle beneath the winter night sky, guided by the story of Baubry, Hedingham's Blue Boar Cub, which takes them through the mischief and magic of a Norman Christmas.

Organisers say the experience offers more than a traditional light trail, with live theatre embedded within the route to create an evening of storytelling and festive entertainment. The castle's medieval parkland, ancient ramparts and landscaped gardens will provide the backdrop for visitors to experience the site in a unique way after dark.

Demetra Lindsay, chatelaine of Hedingham Castle, said the team wanted to create an experience authentic to the castle's extraordinary history while making it a wonderful evening to share with friends. She described the ancient landscape at night as 'truly magical'.

The castle, which stretches back almost 900 years, will host the Keep Christmastide Market on the closing weekend, from December 18 to 20, to extend the festive celebrations.
