One crew member has been found dead after a fishing boat went missing off the Western Isles on Tuesday.

A fishing boat called the Kilda went missing off Port of Ness in north Lewis on Tuesday evening. The alarm was raised at about 21:20 when the vessel failed to return as planned. A major search operation was launched involving a coastguard aeroplane, two coastguard helicopters, two RNLI lifeboats, multiple coastguard rescue teams, local volunteers and Police Scotland.

The body of Douglas Craigie, 49, was recovered at about 02:45 on Wednesday. Two crew members remain unaccounted for: Norman Murray, 40, known as Tam, and Murdo Morrison, 23. All three men are from Lewis. The boat had set out from Brevaig on the west coast of Lewis at about 07:30 on Tuesday to fish in the Port of Ness area.

Police Scotland said conditions were very challenging and urged the public not to conduct their own searches due to bad weather. Chief Inspector Ross McCartney said the families of all three men were being provided with specialist support and asked that their privacy be respected. The search continued on Thursday after being suspended overnight on Wednesday.
