Man and dog rescued from sea cave in cliff rope rescue
Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 26 Oct, 17:02 · Archive
A man and his Belgian Malinois were rescued from a sea cave near Workington, Cumbria, after becoming trapped by the rising tide. The dog walker had been walking along the shore between Workington and Salterbeck when the tide cut them off. He phoned a relative, who contacted Workington Lifeboat Station at around 9.30 am.
Workington RNLI's inshore lifeboat, James R Allan, launched at 9.55 am and reached the initial location at 10.05 am. The crew spotted the man after he had climbed several metres up the cliff face. Attempts to coax him down were unsuccessful, so the lifeboat moved back into deeper water and remained on standby.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team were sent to the scene. A spokesperson for Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said that due to poor weather conditions, the lifeboat was unable to make a safe landing. With the tide continuing to rise and a rescue helicopter still some time away, the officer in charge deployed a Rope Rescue Technician using a twin rope system to extract the man and his dog from the clifftop above.
