Couple jailed for framing innocent driver to dodge speeding charges

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 12 Oct, 14:02 · Archive

A Bradford man and woman have been jailed for naming an innocent driver in response to speeding offence notices to avoid conviction themselves.

Asad Ashraf and Jayna Mistry, both from Bradford, were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on Friday after admitting two counts of perverting the course of public justice. The white Audi Q7 they owned was caught by speed cameras on Cottingley Cliffe Road and Toller Lane in Bradford in January and September 2023.

When speeding notices were sent to Mistry, she responded by naming an innocent man as the driver and providing an address linked to Ashraf. Further guilty pleas for the speeding offences were subsequently submitted in the innocent man's name, and he received a court letter demanding £706 in fines and costs. He was also given five penalty points on his driving licence.

West Yorkshire Police investigated after the innocent driver queried the notice. Investigators established he had nothing to do with the offences and had been deliberately named to obstruct justice. Rachel Wainwright from the force said their actions 'caused a significant amount of stress and anxiety to a completely innocent motorist' and 'escalated the seriousness of the incident from speeding offences, which may possibly have been dealt with out of court, to having to appear before a crown court judge'.
