A man is fighting for life in Alice Springs after police allege he was assaulted with an edged weapon before attempting to drive away and losing consciousness. The assault allegedly occurred on Saltwell Street. The victim then crashed his vehicle into a tree on the median strip of Larapinta Drive about 6.30am on Sunday, approximately 100 metres from the Telegraph Terrace intersection. Officers found the car lodged in the tree with the driver trapped inside.

Investigators determined that the man's injuries were not caused by the crash itself but by the alleged assault beforehand. Northern Territory Police arrested a 22-year-old man known to the victim in connection with the assault.

Southern Watch Commander George Ciolka described the victim's wounds as 'fairly substantial'. He explained that first responders carried out urgent treatment at the scene before the victim was taken to Alice Springs Hospital. Mr Ciolka credited the immediate medical treatment with saving the man's life. The victim remained in critical condition on Monday morning.
