Jonathan Haycock pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-partner by repeatedly punching her to the stomach after bombarding her with calls.
Jonathan Haycock, 44, of Lawson Street, Barrow, was sentenced at South Cumbria Magistrates' Court after pleading guilty to assault by beating, harassment without violence and obstructing a police constable.
Prosecutor Lee Dacre told the court that Haycock repeatedly contacted his ex-partner by phone on 6 February after believing she owed him money. Two weeks later, he attended her mother's address. The prosecutor said: 'The defendant grabbed her by the neck and hair before striking her to the stomach a number of times. He only stopped when the complainant bit him. No injuries were sustained.' Haycock then attempted to evade PC Bagshaw.
The court heard that Haycock had previous convictions for harassment and breach of restraining orders. His defence solicitor Karen Templeton told the court that he had a limited memory of the day and had suffered a head injury in summer. She said he was very drunk when the assault happened but that when sober, 'he is the nicest person you could imagine. He is nice as pie and is very polite and respectful.'
Ms Templeton explained that Haycock's problems arose when he drinks. She said: 'He cannot take that first drink. He wasn't drinking and then started again during a relationship which was not a very healthy one.' She added that he had been attending Alcoholics Anonymous twice per week and had not had a drink in 62 days.
The solicitor told the court that Haycock had been out of trouble for well over a decade and that he would lose his accommodation if he went to prison. She said no-one was taking the matter more seriously than the defendant himself, noting that he had brought a bag to court and was worried about the consequences.
