Manchester United have enquired about Barcelona's Fermin Lopez and Atletico Madrid's Pablo Barrios.
Manchester United have enquired about signing two midfielders: Barcelona's Fermin Lopez and Atletico Madrid's Pablo Barrios, according to reports in Spain. Transfer expert Matteo Moretto said the Premier League club has made approaches to both clubs. 'There's no negotiation, just an enquiry,' Moretto said, adding that United took the opportunity to hold meetings when visiting Madrid for a Champions League match against Atletico earlier this month.
United spent £155 million on midfielders in the summer window, signing Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba. The club remains focused on strengthening the midfield under manager Michael Carrick.
The Daily Mail reports that United have also shown interest in Barcelona's Lopez as they look to add goalscoring options, with the 23-year-old Spanish international rated at around £70 million. The newspaper states that Lopez is also coveted by Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, and has scored five times for Barcelona this season. Lopez missed last summer's World Cup due to a foot injury.
Barrios is described as an integral part of Diego Simeone's midfield at Atletico Madrid and has also been linked with Chelsea. Lopez has played a key role in Barcelona winning consecutive La Liga titles over the last two years.
Transfer expert Moretto suggested both players are unlikely to leave their current clubs. 'It's very unlikely that both will leave,' he said. 'Pablo Barrios is an indispensable player for Atletico and Fermin is key for Barca, but United are looking for those types of players.' United will need to explore alternative options if these moves prove unfruitful.
