The Pentagon announced that mass shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be executed by firing squad on 3 December, with the execution to be livestreamed publicly.

The Pentagon has announced that Nidal Malik Hasan will be executed by firing squad on 3 December at Fort Hood, with the execution to be livestreamed publicly. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the arrangement, stating: 'We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public.' The execution will mark the US military's first in more than 65 years.

Hasan, an army psychiatrist with the rank of major, opened fire on 5 November 2009 in a medical building at Fort Hood where soldiers were queueing for medical clearance for deployment. He killed 13 people and injured 32 others. He was left paralysed from the waist down after being shot by law enforcement and now uses a wheelchair. Hasan has said the attack was an effort to stop soldiers from going to Afghanistan and killing his fellow Muslims, though a military judge barred him from presenting this as a defence during his 2013 trial.

Retired Staff Sergeant Alonzo Lunsford, who was shot multiple times including in the head, will witness the execution. He said: 'You live by the sword, you die by the sword. And the way that he went about doing his deed was a coward's way because we didn't have any way to defend ourselves that day.' Pentagon officials confirmed on Thursday that additional details about the livestreamed execution would follow.
