Father breaks intruder's jaw after machete attack at family home

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 30 Oct, 01:15 · Archive

A father of three broke a 17-year-old's jaw after the teenager allegedly attempted to break into his Port Melbourne home armed with a machete.

Daniel Shoppee, 38, broke a 17-year-old's jaw after finding the teenager allegedly inside his parents' gated home in Port Melbourne, a suburb five kilometres south-east of Melbourne's CBD, around 5.30am on Wednesday.

Mr Shoppee's parents, both in their 60s, noticed a car loitering outside the property and went outside to investigate. The vehicle drove away as they approached, but Mr Shoppee's mother then saw a second figure allegedly standing inside the gate. The teenager was apparently armed with a machete and appeared to be attempting to break into the house. Mr Shoppee and his father immediately ran to confront the alleged intruder. The confrontation left Mr Shoppee with a fractured hand and the teenager with a broken jaw.

Police arrived soon after and arrested the teenager at the scene. He was charged with attempted aggravated burglary and possessing a prohibited weapon. Mr Shoppee told the Herald Sun that the intruder's age was irrelevant: 'People might say he's only 17 but he was a big guy and he was carrying a massive machete. It doesn't matter what age someone is when they're coming at you with a machete at 5.30am.'

The Mirror reports that the teenager had been released from a 49-day sentence just a week before the alleged break-in. Mr Shoppee claimed officers on the scene recognised the boy.
