Carrick insists Manchester United squad behind him despite poor start

Michael Carrick says his Manchester United squad believes in him despite the club's worst Premier League start in 40 years.
Michael Carrick has rejected speculation about his future at Manchester United, saying his squad believes in him despite the club's difficult start to the season. United have won only one of their opening six Premier League games, their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years, and were beaten 2-0 by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Carrick acknowledged that external commentary about the club exists but said it does not reflect what is happening internally. "The players totally believe me," he said. "Just because people talk on the outside doesn't make it the truth." He described the squad as being "in a fantastic place, better than I've seen it for a while".
The manager's comments come after defender Lisandro Martinez issued an outburst criticising the club's hierarchy following Tuesday's defeat. Martinez later met with Carrick and club officials including Jason Wilcox, offering a public apology. Carrick said he was content with the resolution: "He's released his statement, and he's realised he's made a mistake, and I think that's enough for all of us to move on with." United face Leeds United in the Premier League this weekend.
