Mike Ditka, who revolutionised the tight end position as a player and coached the Chicago Bears to their only Super Bowl victory, has died at 86.

Mike Ditka, the legendary Chicago Bears coach and player, has died at the age of 86. His family announced his death on Friday, saying in a statement: 'It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Mike Ditka. While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family.'

Ditka is best known for coaching the Bears to their only Super Bowl title. The 1985 Bears team went 15-1 and dominated their opposition before defeating the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. During his 11 seasons as head coach, Ditka led the team to the playoffs seven times and the NFC title game three times.

As a player, Ditka revolutionised the tight end position as a pass-catcher. The Bears drafted him fifth overall in 1961, and he was named the NFL's Rookie of the Year after becoming the first tight end to record more than 1,000 receiving yards. He played for the Bears for six seasons before spending time with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, with whom he won a Super Bowl. Ditka became the first tight end to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Born on 18 October 1939 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, a blue-collar town northwest of Pittsburgh, Ditka earned a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh, where he became an All-American tight end in 1960. He was hired to coach the Bears in 1982 by George Halas, the team's founder and his former coach. Ditka later coached the New Orleans Saints.
