More than 10,000 visitors attended Muncaster Castle's eight-day Halloween festival during October half term in Cumbria. The castle and its 77 acres of wild woodland gardens were transformed into a Halloween haven with a wide range of attractions.
Activities included scary mazes, torchlight marches, pumpkin carving, zombie shootouts, fire shows, live music and silent discos. Visitors also enjoyed bird of prey flying displays, axe-throwing, archery and crossbow sessions, and explored haunted castle state rooms and garden trails.
A standout attraction was the Zombie Boggle Apocalypse, a new theatrical production created for the festival that featured up to seven performances each day and proved popular with audiences of all ages. The castle's 77 acres of wild woodland gardens were also transformed as part of the celebrations.
Severe weather on the first weekend forced the cancellation of one day of the event, but crowds still turned out in large numbers to enjoy the spooky celebrations. Ewan, a member of the Frost-Pennington family, said the team had 'done incredibly well to overcome everything that has come our way and deliver a fantastic 8 days of Halloween fun'.
The festivities extended beyond the castle grounds as visitors arrived on the Muncaster Express, a vintage train service. One service departed from Manchester on Monday, October 26, stopping at Preston, Lancaster, Carnforth and Ulverston. A second service ran from Carlisle, Penrith, Oxenholme, Carnforth and Ulverston on Wednesday, October 28. Passengers enjoyed scenic views of the Lake District and onboard entertainment before spending the day at Muncaster.
