Three mountain rescue teams were deployed after an emergency SOS from an injured woman near Scafell Pike on Friday, October 23.

Three mountain rescue teams were called out after an emergency SOS reported an injured walker near Scafell Pike on Friday, October 23. Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by Cumbria Police at 2.11pm after an initial SOS message requested assistance and gave a location at Sty Head. The team leader was unable to speak to anyone in the party.

A second emergency SOS report indicated that a woman in the same area had suffered a hip injury and was unable to move. Thirteen Wasdale team members were deployed, with Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team also asked to assist. Further information from an iPhone SOS centre subsequently placed the caller at Taylor Gill Force, within Keswick Mountain Rescue Team's area, prompting that team to be called as well.

Rescuers were initially told two members of the group remained at the Sty Head stretcher box. However, when Wasdale MRT reached the box, its contents had been removed but nobody was there. Team members repacked the equipment before further contact established that the party was making its way down towards Seathwaite.

All three mountain rescue teams were subsequently stood down. The callout lasted four hours and 27 minutes, finishing at 6.38pm, with rescuers operating in rain and temperatures which felt like minus 5.2 degrees Celsius. Wasdale MRT thanked the Keswick and Duddon and Furness teams for their assistance.
