North Wales mountain rescue volunteers complete floodwater training

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 21 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

Ten mountain rescue volunteers in North Wales have completed swiftwater rescue training to prepare for extreme weather events.

Ten volunteers from the Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team, Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, and Mon Search and Rescue have completed a two-day swiftwater rescue training course in north Wales. The Rescue 3 Europe Swiftwater First Responder (Mod 2) course prepares team members to recover themselves and others from floodwater, and all ten participants passed.

The training involved two days in cold, fast-flowing water, with volunteers wading and submerged as they practised rescue techniques. Colin Martin, course instructor from North East Wales Search and Rescue, said the training was 'challenging – both physically and mentally' and that it was important volunteers have experience in all possible scenarios as 'we face the reality of more extreme weather'. He praised the participants' commitment in giving up their weekend for the training.

The course was supported by local businesses, including Plas-Y-Brenin and R3 Safety and Rescue, who provided access to venues and training sites free of charge. North Wales is served by nine mountain rescue teams made up entirely of volunteers, seven based on geographical areas and two specialist teams providing search and rescue dogs and cave rescue services.
