Walker reported stuck under boulder rescued in Lake District

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 19 Oct, 18:57 · Archive

Mountain rescue teams were deployed after reports of a walker stuck under a boulder at Dropping Crag in the Lake District on Sunday evening. Cumbria Police alerted Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team at 5.29pm on 18 October after receiving multiple calls reporting a person 'stuck under a rock or boulder and getting cold' in the area.

Although some location data accompanied the emergency calls, the team leader was unable to speak directly to the person involved. Because the situation 'could have been serious', a multi-agency response was quickly mobilised. Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team deployed 13 team members alongside colleagues from Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency's helicopter, Rescue 899, was also dispatched to the scene.

Rescuers contacted COMRU to explore techniques for moving large rocks and drew up plans in case they were needed. However, before a formal rescue operation was required, further reports came in that a member of the public had helped the person free themselves and they were walking off the fell.

Rescue 899 remained on scene until this was confirmed. A team member who happened to be fell running in the area also independently confirmed that all was well. The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team thanked Duddon and Furness MRT, COMRU, the crew of Rescue 899 and the member of the public for their assistance.
