MP presses ministers over hospital service downgrade plans

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 22 Oct, 11:02 · Archive

An MP has urged ministers to rule out plans to downgrade services at a Norfolk hospital.

James Wild, MP for North West Norfolk, has urged the government to rule out any plans to downgrade critical hospital services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn. Leaked plans by Norfolk and Waveney Hospitals Group propose changes to A&E, maternity and intensive care services at the QEH and James Paget University Hospital at Gorleston.

Mr Wild raised the issue during health and social care questions in Parliament, telling ministers that services should remain as close to the community as possible. More than 500 people gathered to protest against the proposals at the Tuesday Market Place in King's Lynn on Saturday, which Mr Wild attended.

Health minister Karin Smyth told Parliament that she was aware of the issues and that it was up to local systems to decide on clinical pathways across the area. She said all services must be clinically led in consultation with local people. Mr Wild said he will continue to press ministers and work with the community to protect essential services at the QEH. Both hospitals are due to be replaced by new £1.4bn hospitals as part of the New Hospital Programme.
