Nebraska attorney general race enters final weeks

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 13 Oct, 19:32 · Archive

Republican Mike Hilgers and Democrat Jocelyn Brasher are campaigning for Nebraska Attorney General with differing strategies.

Republican Mike Hilgers, the incumbent Nebraska Attorney General, is running for reelection with several major cases pending. He has a U.S. Supreme Court case concerning Colorado's water rights with the South Platte River, an ongoing legal battle with TikTok and other pending lawsuits. Hilgers described his approach to the office as trying to 'really conserve our democratic republic' and seeking to uphold the framework of the U.S. Constitution and the Nebraska Constitution.

Hilgers is challenged by Democrat Jocelyn Brasher, who previously worked as a deputy Dodge County attorney and spent five years in the Nebraska Attorney General's Office in its Consumer Protection Division under former Attorney General Doug Peterson. Brasher argues that Hilgers has taken the office in the 'completely wrong direction', saying he has brought his work as a former state senator and legislative speaker into the Attorney General's role and is legislating based on personal political views. 'Mike Hilgers has forgotten that he's no longer the speaker of the Legislature,' Brasher said.

The two candidates have taken markedly different campaign approaches as they enter the final weeks of the race. Brasher, described as a new name on the ballot, has visited 'all four corners of the state' to speak directly with voters, focusing her conversations on explaining specifically what Hilgers has been doing as AG. She has argued that Hilgers has not been transparent to his constituents. Hilgers, meanwhile, has focused on running positive advertisements that highlight his accomplishments.
