Netflix is rolling out an AI-powered Discover tab to help users find shows and films by selecting themes like 'Something Light' or 'Family Movie Night'.
Netflix is launching a new 'AI Discover' tab on its TV app as part of a series of experimental AI-powered features designed to help users find content to watch. The tab will appear as a 'Discover' option alongside the top menu, accessible to English-language users on supported TVs in the US.
The first experiment under the tab offers theme-based recommendations. Users select from curated themes that include 'Something Light', 'Family Movie Night', 'Quick Watches', and 'Scare Me'. Each theme displays with a relevant clip from a show or film. Netflix says the themes are based on who users are watching with, what mood they are in, how much time they have available, and what is new and trending.
Once users pick a theme, Netflix shows matching recommendations. They can choose more specific themes to refine the results or select 'something different' to start over. Each title includes a 'Tune Your Recommendations' button that allows users to save recommendations they like or exclude titles they don't want suggested again.
Netflix says AI Discover is powered by a new intelligence layer that responds to what users tell the platform in real-time and keeps learning from their preferences. The company framed the tab as a testbed for new features that may eventually become part of the core Netflix experience.
The announcement comes as Netflix seeks to address viewer engagement issues. The company recently laid off around 1,000 employees as growth has slowed and users are reportedly watching the service less. Netflix framed the new tool as addressing the problem of extensive scrolling, aiming to shift the discovery experience towards a more personalized and streamlined approach.
