Spanish player Rafael Jodar, 20, became the youngest semi-finalist in Shanghai Masters history by defeating Casper Ruud 4-6 6-4 6-3.
Rafael Jodar has become the youngest semi-finalist in Shanghai Masters history at the age of 20, defeating three-time grand slam finalist Casper Ruud 4-6 6-4 6-3. The Spanish youngster rallied from losing the first set, mounting a successful comeback in the fourth consecutive match at the ATP Masters 1000 event in which he has recovered after losing the opening set.
Jodar broke Ruud's serve five times across the second and third sets to secure victory in two hours 20 minutes. Speaking after the match, Jodar said: 'Casper, I think, played the important points in the first set better than me. I couldn't win the break points because of his serve, so I knew I wanted to come back again. It was very tough, so I had to give my best level today to win this match.'
Jodar will face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final after the Russian defeated American Tommy Paul 6-3 1-6 6-3. Medvedev, a former Shanghai Masters champion, recovered after losing the second set to claim victory in two hours nine minutes. 'I think today I was a tiny bit off from time to time but the third set was great,' Medvedev said, having hit 31 winners and fired down 16 aces. The victory strengthens Jodar's chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals in his first full year on the professional tour.
