New warning lights installed at Essex level crossings

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 22 Oct, 16:03 · Archive

Red and green warning lights and audible alarms have been installed at two Essex level crossings to improve safety for pedestrians. The upgrades have been completed at Spring Lane, between Hythe and Wivenhoe stations on the Greater Anglia line, and at Woodgrange Close, between Southend East and Thorpe Bay stations on the c2c line. GBR Anglia carried out the work.

Before the upgrades, neither crossing had an active warning system, so pedestrians had to stop, look and listen for trains. The new equipment detects approaching trains and automatically activates red lights and an audible warning telling pedestrians not to cross. Green lights show when it is safe to cross, though people must still follow instructions and take care.

The work is part of a wider programme across the Anglia region. Red and green lights with audible warnings have been installed at 56 level crossings since 2018, with five more due for upgrades by the end of March 2027. At 18 of the upgraded crossings, users previously had to call the signaller to check whether it was safe to cross and no longer need to make such calls. Shenel Bullock, head of level crossing safety at GBR Anglia, said: 'Level crossings can be dangerous if not used correctly so we work to reduce the potential for things to go wrong wherever we can.'
