The Nobel Peace Prize, often considered the most prestigious award on the planet, will be announced Friday in Oslo, Norway. The Norwegian Nobel Committee received 287 nominations for this year's prize, just over a quarter of them organisations.

Possible contenders include the International Space Station, emergency teams in Sudan, children's advocates in Ukraine and two top international courts. Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has attracted attention in prediction markets, and U.S. President Donald Trump has long said he deserves the prize.

Experts say the committee typically focuses on the durability of peace, the promotion of international fraternity and the quiet work of institutions that strengthen those goals. Nominations can be made by heads of state, national politicians, university professors, directors of foreign policy institutes, past Nobel Prize recipients and Norwegian Nobel Committee members themselves.
