North East boxing club opens expanded community gym

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 17 Oct, 00:32 · Archive

Grangetown Amateur Boxing Club has opened a gym extension offering boxing, fitness equipment and activities to improve health in its community.

Grangetown Amateur Boxing Club has opened a new gym extension to tackle health inequalities in an area where life expectancy can be up to 12 years lower than in neighbouring areas. The expanded facility, developed with support from Future Regeneration of Grangetown (FROG), includes exercise bikes, rowing machines, weights and additional boxing training space, transforming the site into a full community gym.

Lynn Pallister, community enterprise manager at FROG, said the extension would benefit a wide range of users. 'We can offer so much more to people right across Grangetown, not just a more extensive offer for our boxers, but also families, women and girls, older residents and anyone else who wants to get active on their doorstep,' she said. 'We're already seeing more people getting involved, and the new facility is going to be brilliant for people's health and confidence for years to come.'

The boxing club grew from the FROG community hub, which opened in 2019 in a former pub and social club building. It was launched in response to plans to demolish the area's last remaining shops and at the request of local young people. FROG secured funding from the National Lottery's Reaching Communities and Power to Change programmes, developing the building into a £1.6 million centre that now includes a play village, café, event space and five retail units.
