Billingham Forum, run by Tees Active, has won the ukactive Design, Build and Refurbishment Award.

Tees Active, which operates Billingham Forum, has won national recognition after its gym beat some of the UK's biggest new leisure schemes. The facility won the Design, Build and Refurbishment award at the ukactive Awards.

Leon Jones, managing director of Tees Active, said the team wanted to challenge expectations of what public leisure could be. 'We didn't just want to build a bigger gym,' he said. 'We wanted to challenge expectations of what public leisure could be and prove that exceptional quality doesn't have to come with a premium price tag.' Jones said the national recognition of this ambition, alongside major developments, was 'an enormous achievement' and an opportunity to put the Tees Valley on the map for excellence in public leisure.

The win reflects Tees Active's partnership with Stockton Council. Councillor Nigel Cooke, cabinet member for environment, leisure and culture at the council, called it 'fantastic news for Billingham and a thoroughly deserved achievement for everyone at Tees Active'.
