North Yorkshire woman seeks endometriosis treatment abroad

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 21 Oct, 07:02 · Archive

A 30-year-old from Ryedale is pursuing treatment abroad for endometriosis after facing long NHS waiting times.

Emily Keal, 30, from Norton in Ryedale, has been living with endometriosis for two years. The condition, which causes cells that normally grow only in the uterus to spread around other organs and fuse them together, is managed with heavy-duty painkillers and hormonal treatments, but causes severe pain for sufferers.

Keal was diagnosed relatively quickly in the Netherlands whilst studying and working there, after presenting to accident and emergency with severe abdominal pain. She says women in the UK often wait years for diagnosis. A recent flare-up of her symptoms landed her in hospital, prompting her to decide she needed to seek treatment abroad.

Keal said that in the UK, regardless of symptom severity, patients typically wait two to three years for surgery to remove endometrial cells. 'It's a long time to have to put your life on hold,' she stated. Keal is currently working with vulnerable young people in Edinburgh and previously worked with an aid agency in Sudan.
