The Northern Lights may be visible across Cumbria tonight due to increased geomagnetic activity.

The Northern Lights may be visible across Cumbria tonight following increased geomagnetic activity. Forecasts suggest auroral displays could be seen across parts of northern England, particularly in areas with dark skies and clear views to the northern horizon.

The best chances of viewing the aurora are expected away from towns and cities. Locations such as the Lake District fells, the Solway coast and other rural parts of the county offer favourable viewing conditions for those hoping to catch a glimpse.

Experts recommend heading to a dark location after nightfall, facing north and allowing eyes time to adjust to the darkness. The aurora may appear faint to the naked eye, but smartphone cameras can often capture the colourful display more clearly.

The Aurora Borealis is caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth's atmosphere. This creates the characteristic shimmering curtains of green, purple and red light that characterise the natural phenomenon.

Forecasts indicate northern England could see the aurora during periods of heightened activity overnight, with viewing opportunities expected to occur at various points through the night.
