The number of UK businesses in significant financial distress has reached 738,144 in the third quarter of 2026, the highest level since BTG began tracking the metric in 2004. This represents a 1.6 per cent increase on the same period last year. According to BTG's research, of the 22 sectors monitored, 20 experienced an increase in significant distress levels. The support services, construction and real estate sectors were among the most vulnerable, with 118,695, 108,340 and 99,908 businesses respectively in significant distress. Real estate saw distress levels jump by 10 per cent year-on-year, whilst construction rose by nearly 5 per cent. The hospitality industry was hardest hit, with a 5 per cent rise in distressed bars and restaurants to 18,866 and a 7 per cent rise in struggling food and drug retailers to 19,269. Mark Fry, chief executive of BTG, said businesses were "battling a combination of rising employment costs, inflationary pressures, higher energy prices and elevated borrowing costs", affecting both small businesses' ability to operate and larger businesses' ability to compete globally. Whilst distress levels rose, the research showed a drop in businesses on the brink of collapse, with 44,033 businesses in critical financial distress, down nearly 21 per cent year-on-year. The findings come as Chancellor John Healey prepares to deliver his first budget on Wednesday.
