Ofsted has ordered Jelly Tots nursery in Silloth to make urgent improvements after finding children were not always safely supervised.
Jelly Tots, based at Solway Community Technology College in Silloth, was found to have breached multiple safeguarding and early years standards during the Ofsted visit on September 3. The report, published on Monday, identified weaknesses in child supervision, food preparation and leadership oversight.
Inspectors found that children were not regularly checked while sleeping, some children were left without direct supervision, and food was not always prepared to reduce choking risk. The report also noted that children sometimes ate food that had been thrown on the floor by other children, creating 'a potential risk of illness'.
Ofsted stated: 'Children's welfare and development are significantly affected by weaknesses in the leadership and governance of the nursery.' Inspectors found that senior leaders lacked oversight of their statutory responsibilities, resulting in several breaches of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. Leaders had 'not ensured that there is an open and positive culture around safeguarding that adequately protects children from harm'.
Ofsted judged children's welfare and wellbeing, and leadership and governance, as needing urgent improvement. Other areas requiring attention included achievement, behaviour and routines, curriculum and teaching, and inclusion.
Staff at Jelly Tots said: 'Following our inspection we have taken immediate action to address the issues highlighted in the Ofsted Report. We have altered some procedures ensuring every child is safe at all times. We put a robust improvement plan in place, with many already completed. We are also being supported by the local authority throughout this time.'
