Police Interceptors officer found guilty of gross misconduct

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 22 Oct, 09:28 · Archive

A sergeant who appeared on Channel 5's Police Interceptors has been found guilty of gross misconduct after a relationship with a junior colleague.

Acting sergeant Ben Sutcliffe, who appeared on Channel 5's Police Interceptors, has been found guilty of gross misconduct by Cleveland Police following a disciplinary hearing.

Sutcliffe exchanged around 64,000 text and WhatsApp messages with a probationary constable, referred to as PC A, between July 2024 and November 2025. The hearing found he had 'risky' public sex with her whilst on duty, including taking his police dog to her home during what was supposed to be night shift work. He also sent sexually explicit messages whilst on duty to the point where it affected his ability to perform his job.

When bosses became suspicious, Sutcliffe lied about their relationship, insisting they were only friends, and encouraged PC A to cover it up. He was also found to have passed confidential details of another officer's arrest to PC A without proper policing purpose. Chief Constable Victoria Fuller ruled his conduct displayed 'dishonesty over an extended period of time' and was 'very serious'.

Sutcliffe resigned from Cleveland Police in February. Following the hearing in Stockton-on-Tees, Chief Constable Fuller adjudicated that if he remained a serving officer, he would have been dismissed. He has been barred from the College of Policing register, preventing him from serving with any police force again.
