Aldi to open new Basildon town centre store in November

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 28 Oct, 13:29 · Archive

Aldi will open a new store at Basildon's Westgate Shopping Centre on November 12.

Aldi will open a new supermarket at Westgate Shopping Centre in Basildon on November 12. The store will take over the site of the former JD Sports and One Beyond stores, with work already underway to prepare it for opening.

The new location is one of seven Aldi branches the retailer plans to open across the UK before the end of the year. Each location is expected to create up to 30 new roles, with a total of 210 roles across all stores. Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said the opening represents 'another big step in our growth plans' and that 'demand for new Aldi stores remains strong'.

Planning permission for the store was granted by Basildon Council in December last year. The plans include a new delivery area, changes to the shopfront, windows and doors, alterations to the car park, an extended pedestrian area, and a new trolley shelter.

The Westgate Shopping Centre was purchased by Basildon Council in June 2024 for around £18.5 million. The site forms part of wider plans to revitalise the town centre with improved services for residents. Proposals for the centre include a hotel, rooftop bar, and nearly 100 new flats.

Aldi currently operates 1,092 stores nationwide and has a long-term goal of reaching 1,500 stores.
