A Jefferson High School football player was ejected after hitting a Grant High School player carrying an American flag before a Portland rivalry game.
A viral video from Friday night's high school football game in Portland, Oregon shows a Jefferson High School player hitting a Grant High School player who was carrying an American flag onto the field before the rivalry match.
The Jefferson player was ejected from the game and did not play in the subsequent contest. The incident prompted widespread discussion on social media, with observers questioning whether the flag-bearer was deliberately targeted.
The Oregon School Activities Association, the state school athletic governing body, said it is 'aware of the pre-game incident' and stated that 'rivalry game or not, there's no place for this behavior before, during, or after an interscholastic contest'. Jefferson High School officials did not respond to requests for comment, and the school's football team social media accounts have since been deleted. A now-deleted post from Jefferson's Instagram page stated: 'The video was not intended to disrespect the American flag'.
