An Oxford-led research project using blood-based biomarkers has been selected for a major NHS dementia initiative backed by up to £80 million.
An Oxford-led research project has been selected as one of nine projects for the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) NHS Fit for the Future Dementia Challenge. The study aims to introduce blood-based biomarkers into routine NHS memory services and is backed by up to £80 million from the Department for Business and Trade's Research & Development Missions Accelerator Programme (R&D MAP).
The project is a collaboration between researchers from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Dementias Platform UK. Professor Vanessa Raymont, director of Dementias Platform UK and director of research and development at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, said the tests 'have the potential to transform dementia diagnosis within NHS memory services'. She added that the project would help understand how these tests can be integrated into routine clinical pathways and at which point they would be most effective.
The researchers aim to establish a blueprint for the use of blood-based biomarkers across the NHS by 2029. Early diagnosis is intended to help people living with dementia and their families access support, treatment and information at a crucial point in their journey. Dementia is currently the leading cause of death in the UK, accounting for nearly one in eight deaths.
