Composer Max Richter, who lives in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, will receive the Ivor Novello award for his originality and influence in contemporary classical music.

Max Richter, a 60-year-old German-British composer living in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, will receive the Ivor Novello award next month at The Ivors Composer Awards. The Ivors Academy recognised him for his 'ingenuity and impact in contemporary classical composition', describing him as 'one of the defining voices in contemporary classical music'. His work blends classical tradition, minimalism, electronic music and sound design.

Richter has composed for numerous films including Mary Queen of Scots, Ad Astra, Miss Sloane and Waltz With Bashir. His most recent score was for the 2025 film Hamnet, which received widespread critical acclaim and secured nominations at the Oscars, Golden Globes and Bafta Film Awards. He has also collaborated with concert musicians including Anna Lapwood and Anne-Sophie Mutter, scored Dior catwalk shows, and worked on ballet productions with choreographer Wayne McGregor.

For the past decade, Richter has lived in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds with his wife Yulia Mahr, a filmmaker and visual artist. In 2022 the couple opened Studio Richter Mahr, a recording studio and creative retreat set in 31 acres of woodland, offering space for young artists, filmmakers and musicians.
