Doig was a magician and former schoolteacher who spent 32 years in the classroom before becoming an eleven-plus tutor. He had also appeared in pantomimes and worked as a magician. He admitted three charges of possessing indecent images of a child and one charge of possessing prohibited images of a child. Doig was chair of the Young Magicians Club, a youth initiative run by magician membership group The Magic Circle, from 2011 to 2022, and served as the group's child protection officer for more than a decade.

Marvin Bulle and Carlos Parks were also jailed following a nightclub shooting in Bexleyheath.
