Pakistani forces and Afghan Taliban personnel exchanged fire along Pakistan's northwestern border on Saturday.

Pakistani forces and Afghan Taliban personnel exchanged fire at several locations along Pakistan's northwestern border on Saturday. The fighting lasted for hours in Kurram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to Pakistani security officials. They said troops backed by artillery destroyed Taliban posts and killed an unspecified number of Pakistani Taliban militants who were attempting to cross into Pakistan from a remote area of eastern Afghanistan. Afghanistan's Taliban government made no immediate comment.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated through repeated border clashes and Pakistani airstrikes in 2024. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan reported in September that it had documented more than 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries from cross-border violence in Afghanistan this year.

Pakistan says many leaders and insurgents from the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, have found sanctuary in Afghanistan since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. Kabul denies this allegation. Militant violence has surged in Pakistan in recent months, with Pakistani authorities saying more than 2,800 militant attacks since January have killed 3,000 people across the country, mainly in the northwest and Balochistan province.
