Panthers fire defensive coordinator Evero after loss to Packers

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 30 Oct, 15:25 · Archive

The Carolina Panthers fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero following a 27-19 loss to Green Bay.

The Carolina Panthers fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley on Friday, one day after losing 27-19 to the Green Bay Packers. Evero is the first NFL coordinator to be fired this season. The move marks the first major coaching decision by head coach Dave Canales, who took over in 2024.

Carolina's defence has struggled significantly. The team entered the week ranked 22nd in overall defence and last in the league against the run. Evero, who was hired in 2023, coached a defence that finished last in the league in 2024 before improving to 16th this season and 15th in points allowed.

Defensive line coach Todd Wash has been named interim defensive coordinator and will call the defensive plays. Wash has 31 years of coaching experience, including 20 in the NFL, and previously served five seasons as Jacksonville's defensive coordinator, when the Jaguars had the second-ranked defence in 2017. Outside linebackers coach AC Carter will expand his responsibilities to include coaching the defensive line, while secondary coach Renaldo Hill continues overseeing the defensive backs.
