A 16-year-old boy has been charged after leading police on a 40-minute high-speed pursuit through Perth suburbs.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly leading police on a 40-minute pursuit through Perth's northern suburbs. Midland detectives attempted to pull over a red Holden Commodore on Malaga Drive in Malaga at about 12.30am on Saturday. Police allege the teenager accelerated away instead of stopping, triggering a dangerous chase through Malaga, Bennett Springs, Caversham, Beechboro and Morley.

During the pursuit, the teenager allegedly put other road users in grave danger by reaching high speeds, travelling on the wrong side of the road, driving through red lights and driving recklessly through roadworks. Other motorists were forced to swerve to avoid collisions. The Police Air Wing tracked the vehicle from above as officers monitored the Commodore heading towards Padbury. The driver eventually abandoned the car on McArthur Street and fled on foot, but was tracked down nearby and taken into custody.

The 16-year-old has been charged with reckless driving to escape pursuit by police, failing to comply with a direction to stop and driving without authority. Bail was refused and he was set to appear before the Perth Children's Court on Saturday. The Commodore has been impounded for 28 days.
