A man was sentenced to three years and four months in prison after cannabis worth £200,000 was discovered in a van stopped for being overweight.
Police stopped an overweight Mercedes Sprinter van travelling southbound on the A1 at Norman Cross on March 2 and diverted it to a DVSA weighbridge in Sawtry. Officers found eight boxes containing cannabis with a street value of £200,000 in the back of the vehicle.
Passenger Gjok Ndrevetaj, 33, of Heygate Avenue in Southend, told officers the van was carrying commercial waste. However, officers also discovered plant pots, soil, cannabis clippings and heating equipment boxes, suggesting the remnants of a cannabis factory.
Ndrevetaj appeared at Huntingdon Law Courts on 20 October and pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis. He was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. Detective Constable Natalia Bochnacka said the discovery demonstrated 'the scale of the operation' and that the case showed how routine vehicle checks could uncover serious criminality.
