Suffolk approves £63m A12 upgrade between Ipswich and Woodbridge

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 20 Oct, 16:38 · Archive

Suffolk County Council has approved a £63 million upgrade to the A12 between the Seven Hills junction and Woodbridge.

Suffolk County Council unanimously approved the A12 upgrade plans on 20 October. The £63 million scheme will cover a stretch between the A12/A14 Seven Hills junction and Woods Lane, north of Woodbridge. The project aims to enhance connectivity, reduce congestion, and improve safety for all road users.

A key element is upgrading a 6.8-mile stretch of single carriageway to dual carriageway between the B1438 and B1079 junctions. Other improvements include junction upgrades, a mobility hub at Adastral Park, and new footways and cycleways. The Martlesham footbridge will be replaced with a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, and a new bus link junction will be built north of Anson Road. The scheme also includes maintenance bays, updated traffic signals, and improved pedestrian crossings.

Christopher Hudson, cabinet member for transport and highways, said the scheme would 'improve the resilience of the local road network as congestion is already a problem, especially at peak periods' and would 'also improve connectivity to the regions' ports and support the visitor economy'.

The council will submit a business case to the Department for Transport. If approved, central government will contribute up to £54.067 million, with the remainder funded by the county council and developers. Subject to DfT approval, construction could begin as early as autumn 2027.
