South Charleston Police Chief Brad Rinehart has announced his retirement after more than 19 years leading the department.

South Charleston Police Chief Brad Rinehart announced his retirement at Thursday's city council meeting after more than 19 years leading the department. Before his time with SCPD, Rinehart spent nearly three decades with Charleston Police Department, bringing nearly five decades of law enforcement service to the Kanawha Valley.

Rinehart said the day marked the culmination of team efforts. 'I'm proud,' he said. 'There was a lot of obstacles at first, building the manpower back up; building the equipment and everything, but I think our reputation in the Kanawha Valley now is phenomenal. I mean, like I said, I'd take my top 10 guys and put them against anybody in the state. I'm that confident.'

The city council presented Rinehart with a commemorative key to the city to mark his retirement. He also honoured recently retired SCPD Captain Daniel Johnson at the meeting.
