Driver pleads guilty to death of 18-year-old in Banbury crash

Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 6 Nov, 13:29 · Archive

Brian Mclaren pleaded guilty to causing the death of 18-year-old Esme Heaton-Biggs in a car crash in Banbury.

Brian Mclaren, 36, of Vincent Way, Banbury, pleaded guilty at Oxford Crown Court on 6 November to causing the death of 18-year-old Esme Heaton-Biggs. He admitted three charges: causing death by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and driving above the legal alcohol limit.

Mclaren's white Mercedes AMG crashed into the Volkswagen Polo being driven by Esme on Bloxham Road in Banbury, near the junction with Springfield Avenue, at approximately 9.15pm on 3 October. Esme was taken to hospital but died the following day from her injuries.

Judge Ian Pringle KC indicated that Mclaren would face a substantial prison sentence. Thames Valley Police's lead investigating officer, detective sergeant Lyndsey Blackaby, said: 'Brian Mclaren made the reckless decision to get behind the wheel despite being disqualified from driving and over the prescribed alcohol limit.' Blackaby added that the guilty plea would spare Esme's family the need for a trial.
