Summarised from 2 outlets · 3 reports · Updated 30 Oct, 11:34 · Archive

Police have responded to reports of pheasants being unlawfully killed using catapults in the Frome area of Somerset. Officers from Mendip Neighbourhood Policing attended a location following the reports. Avon and Somerset Police has also increased rural patrols in Frome following reports of hare coursing, deer coursing, and the illegal use of catapults to kill game birds.

In a statement, Mendip Neighbourhood Policing said: 'Wildlife crime and acts of animal cruelty can have a significant impact on rural communities, landowners, gamekeepers, and those who enjoy the countryside responsibly. Incidents such as this cause unnecessary suffering and will be investigated where offences are identified.' The force is asking residents to report suspicious activity, including vehicles in fields, people with dogs in remote locations, or powerful lights being used at night in woodland, trees and hedgerows.

Reports can be made to Avon and Somerset Police online or by calling 101. Anyone who witnesses a crime in progress should call 999.
