Norwich pub marks decade of Christmas appeal for those in need

The Garden House in Norwich is marking ten years of providing Christmas support to vulnerable people in the community.

The Garden House pub in Norwich's Golden Triangle is launching its Christmas appeal for the tenth consecutive year, seeking donations of food, gifts and stocking fillers as well as volunteer support. Run by Jonathon and Tanya Childs, the pub is part of the Craft Union Pub Company.

What started a decade ago as a small food bank and Christmas dinners for lonely people has expanded into a large-scale community effort. The pub now provides hampers, presents and stockings across the community, supported by farmers donating fresh produce, companies sending Christmas puddings and mince pies, and individuals volunteering their time.

This year's appeal targets several groups: ensuring children from financially struggling families receive Christmas treats; providing stockings for children from overseas in the care of Norfolk County Council; offering meals through homelessness charity St Martin's Housing Trust for people who might otherwise spend Christmas Day alone or on the streets; collecting shoeboxes for veterans; and supporting Ukrainian families living in Norfolk with a carol service and stockings for their children.

Mr Childs said the appeal would not have been possible 'without the incredible kindness of other people'.
