Zelenskiy visits UK as relationship with US deteriorates

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has visited London for talks with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and King Charles.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited London for a 25-minute audience with King Charles and talks with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, arriving after another night of heavy Russian attacks on Ukraine. The ceremonial reception, which included a guard of honour at Downing Street, reflected strong UK backing for Ukraine's position.

Burnham said in a statement before Wednesday's meeting: "My message to the Ukrainian people could not be clearer, we are with you for as long as it takes, and we will go further and faster in our support to back your courageous fight for peace in Europe." The UK has said it does not support a US-Russia deal to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports, and called for allies to keep up economic pressure on Russia.

Zelenskiy's visit follows a sharp deterioration in his relationship with the United States. Trump said at the weekend that Zelenskiy should be replaced as Ukraine's leader. In an interview with podcaster Piers Morgan, Zelenskiy described as painful Trump's alignment with Russia over Ukraine. Zelenskiy said that whilst an energy ceasefire was "some step to peace", Russia continued its aerial bombardment of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, breaching any such arrangement. "It is a pity that we are losing a strong partner," Zelenskiy said, apparently referring to the US.
